Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship

Cardiology Training Overview

The Division of Cardiology at Cornell offers an advanced training fellowship in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, which is accredited by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Eduaction (ACGME). The Electrophysiology Service has a high volume of clinical activity related to all aspects of arrhythmia evaluation and treatment. The service comprises six attending electrophysiologists, assisted by nurse practitioners in the device clinic, nurse practitioners on the inpatient service, and research support staff.

The fellowship consists of two years devoted to intensive training in all aspects of invasive electrophysiology. Fellows will be trained in mapping and ablation of complex arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation, atrial tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia. They will attain expertise in device implantation and management, with emphasis on implantable defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization.

The laboratory has active basic and clinical research programs, and fellows are expected to participate in projects with the goal of presenting at national meetings and preparing their research for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Research interests in the electrophysiology laboratory include the cellular electrophysiology and clinical features of idiopathic ventricular tachycardia; mechanisms and pharmacology of atrial arrhythmias; non-linear dynamics and mathematical control of arrhythmias; selection of patients for resynchronization and prediction of outcome; evaluation, management, and prognosis of syncope; risk stratification for sudden cardiac death; and AV nodal physiology in humans. In addition to these areas of research, the laboratory participates in numerous multicenter clinical trials.

Structure of the Fellowship

Specific rotations within the fellowship are:
  1. Invasive electrophysiology laboratory, in which fellows perform electrophysiology and device-related procedures (this forms the core of the fellowship).
  2. Outpatient consultation and device clinic.
  3. Inpatient consultation.

Our Faculty

The Electrophysiology Faculty includes 5 full-time physicians and 1 basic scientists.

Bruce B. Lerman, MD, Chief of Cardiology and Director, Electrophysiology Lab
Steven M. Markowitz, MD
George Thomas, MD
David Christini, PhD
Christopher Liu, M.D.
Jim Cheung, M.D.

Conferences

Schedule
Monday   Cardiology Grand Rounds
Tuesday EP Journal Club / Core Curriculum / Electrogram Review Conference
Wednesday Clinical Conference (case presentations with clinical management discussed by Division staff)
Friday Fellows' EP Noon Conference

A core curriculum in electrophysiology is taught throughout the year by the full-time faculty.
